This thesis is about saving energy consumed in buildings lighting by using a prototype BEMS. The purposes of this prototype BEMS is to increase energy saving, automation and control, safety and security. Saving energy is achieved through optimizing heating, cooling and lighting energy consumption, eliminating leakage of currents, and reduction of heat loss in building utilities. This research focuses on programming of a microcontroller to minimize energy consumption in the lighting sector. First, different methods of lighting control are examined and then a new method is designed by combining the studied methods in order to achieve the maximum control over lighting. The new method is combination of occupancy-linked control, daylight-linked control and time-based control. A sample program is written to test the most complex part of this new method that tests the occupancy-linked control procedures. In this program, the BEMS switches lights on when occupancy is detected by a sensor in a specific zone, and off again after a predetermined time period when no occupancy is detected. The time period and some other user preferences can be configured by users by connecting the BEMS device to a personal computer and using application software specifically designed for the BEMS device. Since this system is software based, other sensors can be added to the system and the system can be customized according to users needs e.g. defining scenarios so that after triggering a sensor, multiple commands will be executed instead if just switching on or off a set of lights. Additionally, the design of this BEMS has potential to convert it to a burglar alarm by changing the operating mode. Saving energy, increasing comfort and safety are the main purposes of this method. Another capability of the BEMS is related to the wiring. Command and power circuit has been separated. This allows localized switching for the whole system. In future studies, the method developed in this research has to be tested in practice and further developed to cover the errors found. In addition, studies can be conducted on different application of BEMS like radon concentration control. This can be done by adding radon sensors and using CFD to get additional monitoring and control functions. The goal will be achieving optimal trade-off between energy saving and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) particularly excess radon accumulation. By using simulation the BEMS can make intelligent decisions.
